A documented procedure specifying the parameters and methods for a particular welding operation, ensuring consistent quality.
A welding procedure specification defines all the essential variables for a welding operation: the welding process (e.g., MMAW, GMAW, FCAW), joint design, base material, filler material, preheat temperature, interpass temperature, travel speed, electrical parameters, and post-weld heat treatment if required. WPS documents are qualified by testing (procedure qualification records) and are required under AS/NZS 1554 for structural steel welding. Welders must also be individually qualified to perform the specified procedures.
