Universal Beam (UB)

A hot-rolled structural steel section with an I-shaped cross-section, wider flanges than a channel, used primarily as horizontal members to carry loads across spans.

Universal beams are the most common structural steel section used in construction. They are hot-rolled to an I-shaped profile optimised for bending resistance, making them ideal for floor beams, roof beams, and lintels. Sizes range from 150UB to 610UB, with the number indicating the approximate depth in millimetres. Manufactured to AS/NZS 3679.1.
